I downloaded a bunch of Sunday School songs by Cedarmont Kids for Emily. This morning, on the way to daycare, we were listening and I'm not sure if Emily loved it or not, but I have to say that I was struck by the fact that there are whole sermon series' in those songs. It's been awhile since I've listened to any of them so I thought I'd jot down my favorites . . . the ones I want Emily to get deep down in her heart:
"Oh, be careful little ears what you hear . . ." You remember this one. It goes on to tell little eyes to be careful what they hear, tongues to be careful what they say, minds to be careful what they think. But the chorus of all of these verses is, "for the Father up above, is looking down in love." I think it's so sweet that while we need to be careful of the input/output in our lives, all of that is tempered by the fact that God loves us and doesn't warn us to be good out of some kill-joy motive but out of love for us. Maybe I can use that logic when she thinks her mommy is a no fun fuddy dud that just wants to make her life miserable. That should hit between 13 and 17, right?
"I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart . . ." Ahh, one of my favorites. I remember when I was a youngun at Capitol Hill and we'd go through the normal verses of peace that passes understanding and start in on verses that said we had the "far out faith that freaks my friends out," or the "Bible belief that baffles Buddha." Good times. The version on Emily's playlist includes a verse that I hadn't heard before and I had to back it up to catch it. In double time, it said "I've got the wonderful love of my blessed redeemer way down in the depths of my heart." What a mouthful! Again, the chorus of this one is what made me think, "this would preach!" It said "and I'm so happy, so very happy, I've got the love of Jesus in my heart." I sure hope that Emily gets that. That her joy sinks way down where no one has a chance to dislodge it.
Anyhow, these great old Sunday School tunes have been rattling around in my brain all day and I just had to get some of this down.
Just goes to show you never know what God will use to snag your attention.
